It’s after one o’clock in the afternoon by the time I get back to the house. My decision is made and now that it’s locked into place, I can’t get back to her fast enough.

It’s been more than a day since I left Violet, wrapped only in a blanket.

My regrets almost crush me. My reasoning in that moment rages in my brain but I fight it back. I know why I made that decision. To try to save her … from myself.

But I can’t stay away.

I have to have her.

My … whatever this is … lust, or something much more savage and life-changing, has sunk its teeth into me ruthlessly. If I don’t find that girl soon, I feel like I might lose my grip.

I try not to go there but the thoughts pummel through my brain.

What if she consoled herself with … someone else?

Like Hayes?

I’ll fucking kill him.

She’s mine.

I pull into the driveway. Of course I notice that all the cars are gone. Including hers. I vaguely remember from that first day we almost met, when I saw her out the window, that she drives an older model Toyota.

Not anymore. I’ll buy her whatever she wants. A Shelby. A Porsche. A goddamn limousine.

I grasp at straws. Maybe it’s possible she’s still here. She might have decided to hang out with Millie and Bo for the weekend. Maybe …

There’s no reason for her to be here if her car isn’t.

I search the house. I go down to the boat to see if maybe she went back to it. I find her dress. The shreds of her bikini. But no Violet.

Searching the main house, I bang on Bo’s door.

He mumbles something, then a few seconds later opens the door. He has a towel around his waist and, behind him, Millie is in his bed, covered mostly with a sheet.

“Hey, man,” says Bo. “Where’d you go?”

“Chicago. Where’s Violet?”

“Chicago?”

“Where’s Violet?”

“I haven’t heard from her, Caleb,” says Millie. “She’s probably back at the dorm.”

“I need the address. And her phone number.”

Bo is staring at me and has probably figured out that something is going on between me and Violet. I don’t have time to explain it. I don’t give a damn about anything right now except finding her.

“I’ll call her.” Millie picks her phone up from Bo’s bedside table. She calls Violet and I can hear the sound of Violet’s phone ringing. “Her phone went straight to voicemail. That’s weird. She usually picks up.”

Something’s wrong. I don’t know if it’s a sixth sense or an instinct that gets honed by combat and regularly watching people close to you get shot or blown up or killed, but I can feel it. My heart and my head are both crackling with fear. For my girl. Something has happened to her. “Millie, I need the key to your room.”

She gives me Violet’s number and the key and I can’t get out of there fast enough.

“Caleb?” Bo calls after me but I’m already out the door. It’s a miracle I don’t either die or get arrested on my way to campus.
